BYD is expanding its range of vehicles in Germany with the all-electric family SUV Seal U. The five-seater can travel up to 500 km on a single charge.

BYD is expanding its model range on the European market with the all-electric SUV BYD Seal U. According to the Chinese electric car manufacturer, the upper mid-range SUV – the U in the name stands for utility – is positioned as a family car. Deliveries of the BYD Seal U are scheduled to begin in Europe in February 2024. The Seal U will be available in the Comfort trim level for 41,990.00 euros and in the Design trim level for 44,990.00 euros.

After the BYD Seal sedan and the BYD Dolphin, the BYD Seal U is the next model in BYD's Ocean series. The SUV is characterized by its X-shaped front end with flowing and soft lines. The wide-style rear complements the rounded front end. The BYD Seal U is 4,785 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,668 mm high and is positioned below the seven-seater BYD Tang in the BYD model range. The wheelbase of the SUV is 2,765 mm. The 60:40 split rear bench can be folded down, increasing the load volume from 552 to 1,440 liters. The drag coefficient is 0.32.

Two Equipment Lines, Two Powertrains

The BYD Seal U is available in two equipment lines, Comfort and Design. Both variants have different drivetrains. In both models, a permanent magnet synchronous motor drives the front wheels. Thanks to a peak output of 160 kW (218 hp) and 330 Nm of torque, even at zero speed, the Seal U should reach a top speed of 175 km/h. Like all passenger cars offered by BYD in Europe, the Seal U is also equipped with the company's cobalt-free blade battery technology as standard. The Seal U's battery is said to have an energy density with a peak value of 145 Wh/kg.

The Comfort version has a battery with a capacity of 71.8 kWh and is designed to travel up to 420 km (WLTP, combined) on a single charge. The Design version has a battery with a capacity of 87 kWh, which should enable a range of up to 500 km (WLTP, combined). The Seal U has a three-phase 11 kW AC on-board charger as standard; it can charge with up to 140 kW at DC charging stations. In this case, a charge from 30 to 80 % capacity takes 27 or 28 minutes, depending on the battery size.

The BYD Seal U has an 8-in-1 electric drivetrain. The combination of eight key components in one assembly is intended to ensure optimum space utilization and enables an overall efficiency of 88 %. In addition, the 8-in-1 electric powertrain is closely coupled with a heat pump that precisely controls the temperature of the battery.

BYD App Controls Functions Remotely

The driver assistance systems in the Seal U include Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Brake Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Collision Alert, Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Intelligent Speed Adaptation and Blind Spot Monitoring. The Design trim level also has a head-up display. Full LED headlights including high beam assistant are fitted as standard.

The Intelligent Cockpit System from BYD is operated via the 12.8 or 15.6" electrically rotatable screen, which can be used in portrait or landscape format. Numerous driver-relevant information is also displayed on the 12.3" LCD instrument cluster. The Intelligent Cockpit System offers Internet access at 4G speed, integrates Spotify and navigation from Here and connects to the driver's cell phone via either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Voice control can be activated with the voice command "Hi BYD". Over-the-air updates (OTA) keep the on-board software up to date. Numerous vehicle functions can be controlled remotely using the BYD app on a smartphone or other mobile device.
